When the weather is not as hot out. Early mornings, evenings, night, and when there is rain or overcast is usually best. You might catch one or two fish during the heat of the day but bass are definitely more actively feeding on top water when the weather is cooler. When it's hot out they like to go to deeper, cooler parts of the water. My favorite top water lures are Buzzbaits and soft plastic frogs. There are many more top water lures that work but these always work for me. We always had luck at sunset (with clear skies). We always used hula poppers, crazy crawlers, spooks, devil spinners, swimming mice- basically anything that wiggles as you reel it in nice and slow, like something decided to go for a nice sunset swim. Bass tend to taste like the water you pull them from, so expect a muddy tasting fish... someone told me you can soak the fillets in milk to take care of that. Never heard of taking bass easily in muddy water. Good luck.

Simple. Two Aspects will help you fish top water. Water temp, and water movement. -If the water is too hot, the fish are more than likely not going to be anywhere near the top of the water. The fish wont be feeding off the top of the water because the heat is going to cause them to seek refuge in cooler waters. This uaually means that they are deeper down, staying away from the surface. -The second is the waters movement. Part of the reason that top water lures work are their ability to attract fish. The water should be still, as still as can be. You should be able to look down and see your reflection not blurry in the water. If the water is moving, then it will be harder for the fish to see the lure flipping around in the water.

During hot weather, fish at night with buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, noisy topwaters and soft plastics. during the day in hot weather, you WILL find bass beneath mats of grass and other water plants. it is cooler under them, the bass don't have to go far to find food either. use frogs on top of the grass and weeds or use heavy jigs to punch through the mats and jig them up from beneath the weedbeds. you will need heavier gear to use either of these methods but they are both extremely successful summertime daytime methods. not all the bass go deep in the summer. same as during winter. they don't all go deep. some of my larger fish are gotten shallow in the dead of winter. however, winter fishing here in socal is not ice fishing.

Dawn and dusk are the best times. use pop-r, hula popper, jitterbug, buzzbait, and topwater frogs. hope this helps.
